About Us

Founded in 1964, the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department (SCVFD) is an ALL volunteer department and is located in the central Black Hills area covering a forty-two (42) square mile area for the Silver City Fire Protection District.  The SCVFD is a member of the Pennington County Fire Service, works closely with South Dakota State Wildland Fire, U.S. Forest Service, Pennington County Search & Rescue, Rapid City Fire Department, and our adjoining fire departments, Johnson Siding VFD, Rochford VFD, Hill City VFD, Brownsville VFD, and Nemo VFD.  The SCVFD is an ISO-Class 9 rated department (from Station 1; and are working on obtaining that status for our new station):

Our department has two (2) stations:

  • Station 1 (Main Station) - Silver City, South Dakota

  • Station 2 (Merritt Station) - Located off U.S. Highway 385 / Rochford Road behind Cousin's Pizza & Pub / Trout Haven / Sugar Shack on the Pennington & Lawrence County(s) line.

We have twenty-two (22) members on our roster, and the majority of our fire district is made up of U.S. Forest Service land of ponderosa pine forests with wildland-urban interface,  large fresh water reservoir, streams, rugged terrain, that's accessible via an off-road / ATV / fire trail network.  Our department has wildland, structure, and EMT certified firefighters on the roster.
